Angels and Demons by Dan Brown was one of the preeminent page-turner I have ever read. From the very beginning I couldn’t put it down. I did not have the idea where Dan Brown would take the story next. Following the protagonist Robert Langdon, a Harvard symbolist on his 1st great adventure was spectacular. I wanted to mug up more, to know the mysteries of the Illuminati and the only way to do it was to let the story naturally reveals as I read. I can usually predict what is going to happen in thrillers, but Dan Brown did a superb job keeping everything anonymous until absolutely needed to disclose the secrets.
I first read the book on a flight from New York to Rome, with a few places in between. Never having read the Da Vinci Code earlier I didn’t have as high of anticipations as most people do when going to read Angels and Demons. I have heard a lot that the Da Vinci Code is much better than Angels and Demons but I differ with that. Angels and Demons is Dan Brown at his peak. I enjoy how he took historical events, places, art and twisted them completely into a thriller that left me longing for more.
Dan Brown not only wrote a great story but he also brought up the hoary argument of Science vs. Religion. Both sides of the argument are considerately brought up in Angels and Demons and in the conclusion it is up to the reader to choose which side they consider is the right path for them. I love that he didn’t attempt to convince the reader of his opinion on the issue but instead put the evidence and opinions out there for us to make up our own minds.
Having traveled to Rome and seeing the places talked about in the novel Dan Brown did a brilliant job putting the readers in the places talked about. As I walked the path of Robert Langdon it looked even more tangible to me that events as thorough as the illuminati pulled off in the book could have really happened, giving more command to the fast paced adventure.
Mankind took thousands of years to progress from the wheel to the car and only decades from the car to space. We measure scientific advancement in weeks. The crack between us grows deeper and deeper, and as religion is left behind, people find themselves in a divine void. They are a frantic scream of the existing soul, isolated and anguished, crippled by its own illumination and its helplessness to accept meaning in anything detached from technology…
I know! Excessively, but when you can bloc science and religion into a book that tempers your brainpower – it’s a winner for me!
