City of Fallen Angels is the 4th installment in the popular Mortal Instruments young adult (YA) urban fantasy series by Cassandra Clare. This is a fairly complex fantasy series so it’s really needed to have read the preceding books in the series before picking up this one.
City of Bones, the prequel to City of Ashes, introduced readers to Clary and the alter-Manhattan she’s thrown into when she realizes that she can see outside the glamour’s that shield normal humans, or ordinary, from the werewolves, vampires, faeries, and sorcerers among us. In City of Ashes, Clary’s crash course in demon killing gets even crazier, as Valentine, her long-lost father (and all around evil guy), plans a political takeover of the Shadow hunter regime with the aid of the demonic forces Clary and her friends are under oath to fight.
Regardless of the magic themes, City of Ashes certainly isn’t your ordinary fairy tale or fantasy book. Clare’s vision of modern-day Manhattan is firm and prickly: Punked-out warlocks wear shimmer eyeliner and leather pants, and faeries throw terrific dance parties. The plot’s twists and turns will keep you predicting, and Clare’s portrayals are so detailed, you’ll be able to visualize the characters and places clearly. Still, the actual reason you won’t be able to put down City of Ashes is its astonishing characters. You will get so drawn into the drama between Clary and her friends that the fact that they carry archangel blades, ride flying motorcycles, and get turned into vampires will hardly register as anything out of the normal.
Clary is energetic and clever. Totally the girl you want on your side when scary Drevak demons are attacking. She isn’t just a fighting heroine, though. You’ll have consideration for her when she’s feeling diffident next to her stunning friend, Isabelle, and uncertain about the awkward romantic tension with Simon. You’ll also fall hard for dazzling Jace and his snarky one-liners. The love triangle he, Simon, and Clary get caught in is a little creepy, but Clare does a great job of mingling it into City of Ashes’ complex plot.
Of course, there are plenty of paranormal action sequences and grisly battles to keep even the most die-hard fantasy fan’s adrenaline pumping. But be cautioned: Clare’s proficient descriptions of the strange dark forces Valentine summons can be truly creepy, and more than a bit repulsive.
Still, don’t let that scare you away from City of Ashes. Trust us, you’ll be so into this smart, humorous, romantic read that you won’t even be upset at the cliff-hanger ending. We are just counting down to 2009, when the last chapter of Clary’s story hits the shelves!
