Review:

In penetration testing, these days, you come across security testing folk who have a lot of experience running tools, but fewer who really understand and can write their own. It’s a huge cut off in the industry and this book discourses the problem head on. Coding for Penetration Testers takes the reader from common concepts in all languages into the most used languages by pen test tools; bash, windows perl, cmd, php, ruby, python and powershell. The sub-sections cut straight to the most significant functions of each language for testers. Moreover there are sections that cover extensive common tools like net cat, nmap, nessus/openvas, and Metasploit.

Face it, there are technologies you are expert in and others which find you deficient. Yet in pen testing, you are expected to be expert in all things you come across. Coding for Penetration Testers is one of those exceptional books that no matter your current status, can assist you get better. The author takes you for a ride through several languages including shell scripting for both Windows and nix platforms, Ruby, python, and more. This book can help to revive the concepts you may have forgotten on infrequently used platforms, impart new techniques for answering challenging complications, and assist you to be the proficient tester you want to be. Further, the languages covered are the same languages which clout some of the most widespread open source tools and allow you to modify those tools to produce more precise and fruitful results.

This has been a very useful book to me in learning to make some use of new scripting tools in more beneficial ways. I have a tad of python at present, but having instances of how these languages can be used across numerous different languages is really expedient. Some of the book is still a tad over my head, but I certainly feel like I’m starting to pull in. Great read and some good exercises to make the instances even better. I’m expecting they’ll do a 2nd book and hold up with other languages.
This book worth to solve a common problem in pen testing. A lot of entry-level pen testers don’t code at all and they finish up doing boring task or don’t know how to automate. This book provides direction when to select what language. I highly recommend this turn out to be essential reading for every tester on your team.
