Murakami is an artist of seduction when it comes to ideas of estrangement and dislocation. He leads you into a surreal universe, where aspirations and reality overlap, classical and jazz music is imbued, and the lonely hero has a soulful journey enriched by his subconscious provocations. To me, Murakami’s books are like ice cream. Many people will claim that it’s just more of the same, and in a way they are right. But I am not complaining, because it’s just more of the same delicious, luscious thing. Likewise, while a too large bowl of ice cream can have tummy problems, this time Murakami limits himself to a courteous amount of 355 pages. I will not get into much detail on the plot.At the age of 20, Tsukuru Tazaki is kicked out of his brotherhood of five friends, three boys and two young women. Each of them holds a colorful name: Red, Blue, White and Black, except for Tsukuru. Its representative of the way he believes about himself: colorless, with nothing valuable to provide the rest of the group – or even the globe.Little does he recognize that that’s not the way the others think about him?So, which point of prospect is the correct one? All of Murakami’s protagonists are deep thinkers, but Tsukuru is one of his most interesting. He’s very much rooted in the present, so his forays into the hereafter and the past are rather temporary. He doesn’t come wrapped up in nostalgia or what can be, an ability that makes him a unique detached ability to judge his own activities and those of the masses who have traveled through his lifetime.
This works for a pretty atypically structured novel, with a game that is far from predictable (though not really significant). The focal point is the development of Tsukuru’s sense of self in relation to those round him.Murakami is a brilliant writer. He makes observations that may seem cliché or simple, attempting to teach roughly the world things I already basically know or have tried a million times, but he does so in ways that seem to me to always be beautiful and interesting. And though this does not deliver the wild surrealism or magical realism of a Windup Bird or Dance it still possesses the feel of a folk tale and a journey and I just enjoyed it so much. There’s real pain here and real catharsis and it’s one of my favorite writers at the peak of his powers in a way I haven’t truly seen in rather a long time. Upon completing it, I felt perfectly content and highly introspective myself. I anticipate that the conclusion is going to piss off a bunch of readers. But I kind of love it.
