No doubt this is an excellent book for academics. There are thorough topics with detailed accounts.First, some negatives before I move on to the positives. Quickly glancing at the book, there are not many diagrams. I would have chosen a lot of diagrams. I would have still preferred examples on Linux where applicable. The accounts on the layers are wonderful. On that point is an introduction of Layer 7 HTTP at the outset, and it is explicated in detail later on.The chapters on TCP is actually beneficial.Overall for learning computer networks for a BS/MS course, this book is really beneficial. The most significant facet of this volume are the workouts. Some of the best problems in any networking book are found in this volume. It impresses the readers a keen interest to consider and ruminate over matters.Problems and good exercises make a book in the end.Group work/class discussions can benefit a bunch of teachers. This volume encompasses all of the indispensable material that is in the other books, but manages to do so in a relevant and entertaining room. This book is very up to date as seen by the freeing of the 5th Ed when the 4th Ed is barely two years previous.
There are tons of practical exercises using wire shark and the companion website is really useful and relevant. The position of this script with respect to teaching networking concepts could be tallied up as “try it out and find out for yourself”. One interesting matter to notice is that the socket programming example are all in Java. Overall, it’s a really good record, but I have to state that this book is top-heavy, by which what I mean is the focus is more on the upper strata of the protocol stack and many matters are given out in the lower strata.May be thought for software people, but not for hardware people. I’m not new to computer networking and can’t interpret this book from the beginner’s point of view, but I’m under the impression this book might be a little hard to travel along for those who have no idea how computer networks operate. The reason I’d recall that way is because of top-down approach. My recommendation is this is a very good for academics.
