The authors, Steve Winterfield and Jason Andres, covers everything you want to contemplate when thinking about how to use cyberspace to carry out warfare operations. Although the content has been around for a while, it is stunning how minor the key concepts have changed in the past years. In a world where new novelties totally change the widespread culture every 18 months, the indication that Cyber Warfare’s operational principals stay inert year after year is counter-intuitive. After reading through the different matters within though, you begin to understand the icy pace. These tricky concepts spawn obstinate problems and the authors do a great job of clearing them up. I do have a minor issue with the subtitle though: “Techniques, Tactics and Tools for the Security Practitioners.” The way I read this book, the general purpose security expert will not find this book very beneficial except as contextual information. Apart from the chapters on Logical Weapons, Social Networking and Computer Network Defense, most of the stuff has to do with how a nation state, mostly the US, prepares to fight in cyber space. There is an edge for the general purpose security expert, but this material is covered in more detail in other books.
The book is illustrated. Some of the illustrations are right out of military guides and have that PowerPoint ranger look about them. Some are screenshots of the different tools presented. Others are images of various equipment. One graphic stick out for me in the chapter cyberspace challenges. The graphic in question is a well-ordered Venn Diagram that sum up all of the Cyber Warfare issues stated in the book, classifies the intricacy of each issue and shows where they overlay in terms of Policy, Courses, Organization, Technology, Folks and Expertise. My only ding on the illustration is that in the same chapter, the authors talk over how much each issue might cost to overcome. It would have been very simple to illustrate that info on the Venn diagram and make it more complete.
Along the way the reader gets a fine briefing on the legitimate issues surrounding Cyber Warfare, the integrities that apply, what it takes to be a cyber-warrior and a slight indication over the prospect about what the future of Cyber Warfare might bring. In the end, Winterfield and Andres get high grades for summarizing this intricate material into an easy-to-understand guidebook; an introductory document that most military cyber warriors should have at their fingertips and a book that should be vested in the shelf of anybody interested in the topic.
