Reviews

A nocturnal camera and a case of inextricable consciousness. The action takes place in 1947 and is taken from a famous novel by Elie Wiesel, Nobel of Peace. Already adapted in 1985 by Miklos Jancso, but the copies of the film seem lost, Dawn (The Dawn) is centered around five characters. Four companions in arms and a young man who must overcome his conflicts to engage in armed struggle. At a pivotal moment in contemporary history – the struggle for the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine – Wiesel traced a refined way. It is in this direction that the Genevan Romed Wyder designed his film. Men, four walls, darkness and fear, dust and fatigue, a perfectly contained madness, destinies that seem to play, hic et nunc. In such a score, the direction of actors must be impeccable. And Wyder manages his group perfectly. Watch them while filming them. Shows the birth of political consciousness and the determinism of the individual confronted with the dilemma of choice. The particular case becomes abstraction, the universal takes shape. Joël Basman, whom we have just seen at the Berlin festival in the excellent Als wir träumten, is simply fantastic. Haunted. Like its partners. This project, years ago that Romed Wyder dragged him in his bag. A year ago, he unveiled it in Solothurn. Today, the film is on display. It should not be missed…
