Review:

“Secrets and Lies: Digital Security in a Networked World” is the perfect book to hand to new supervisors or new workers joining your organization who have not been exposed to cyber security in their past lives. This is an outstanding information security book that everyone working in this field should read. It is also the perfect book for experienced security professionals who want an overview of the major concerns our community is facing today. Schneier wrote it over a decade ago, but his ideas still resonate. He brings up the idea that “security is a process, not a product.” With that one line, Schneier captures the core of what our cyber security community should relate to. He describes that albeit we have cutting-edge technology intended to specially find cyber crimes, people are the still the weakest link. He explains how cyber hazard is not a special category. It is just another risk to the business. He highlights the absurd idea that software sellers have no legal responsibility or selling buggy code, and he was one of the 1st thought leaders to distinguish the opponent as something more than just a hacker. The author is very specific about the security domains without being too procedural but instead focused on the “view point” behind each limitation. In that regards he shows a lot of ways hackers can breach our security and how far we have progressed in opposing them. He has a sort of cynical view concerning this because as he claims the bad folks are already ahead of administrations and other groups because of their reluctance to think of security as a process but rather as a product to be set up without appropriate metrics measurement and capacity planning. He makes the case for things that the cyber security community still needs so as to make the Internet more secure, things like firming up privacy, integrity, and availability (CIA); refining Internet confidentiality and Internet anonymity; and challenging the notion that security experts must make the Sophie’s Choice between enhanced security or more confidentiality in terms of government stakeout. To conclude, he anticipates the need for a Bit-coin-like competency long before Bit-coin became popular. The content surrounded by Secrets and Lies is a great introduction to the cyber security community, and Schneier conveys the story well. Because of that, Secrets and Lies is contender for the cyber security canon, and you should have read it by now.
