It begins with a 75 percent inconsistency in an account for computer time and ends with the seizure of a small group of German hackers. The journey from this beginning to the end is one of the most incredible in all of computing. Along the way, it takes in the NSA, the FBI, the CIA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, all divisions of the United States military and the Soviet KGB. Luckily, in the end the good folks emerge triumphant, but it is difficult to feel very comfortable about it.
This is a story about illegal access into computers, where the intruders are after military and fiscal data. All info considered of value is sent to the Soviet KGB in exchange for cash and drugs. A key hint of the story is the lack of team work between the American federal agencies and how they refuse to obligate themselves to anything. In the result of the calamity of 9-11, this is disturbing, as it seems that the absence of communication between the different agencies is where the real letdown occurred on that appalling day.
Cliff Stoll is a blend computer programmer and astronomer who was the main actor in the proceedings that led to the trepidation of the hackers. A self-confessed California hippie type, he started being anti- government and yet finished up lecturing to some of the most legislative of institutions. In the end, he gives some of the top arguments as to why illegal access to computers is a severe crime. As a scientist, he comprehends how all assist from the free flow of information and mutual reliance and how hackers terminate that, coercing all into a state of continuous suspicion.
This is one of the best popular books on computing that has ever been written. Though there are some passages that need a tad of computer knowhow to understand, they are very scarce and not necessary to the understanding of the story. It also leaves you pondering as to how many other systems have been passed in where the tracks are either absent or have been overlooked.
And, most important of all, Cliff Stoll is a great narrator, a natural writer. Or, if he’s not, he’s got me tricked. I know I’ve ‘discovered’ this book almost 25 years late, but man, is it ever a tremendous read! Highly recommended. Yeah, very highly!
