Review:

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt is an awesome read. The book is gripping and touching. Tartt is an expert in foretelling, letting us know just enough of what is in the offing that we feel washed up to put down the book. I found myself staying up late for several nights, turning page after page to link the dots. This book is similar to The Secret History in this regard. And it surpasses that prior book in its great passionate depth. The opening of the book, in New York City, is awfully sad and in the hands of a less significant author this material would be hard to deal with. However, Tartt has signaled us adequately about the prospect of our hero, Theodore Dekker that we stick with him. And from the 2nd section of the book, while we have no deficiency of ongoing melancholy, it is alleviated by hope or wit.

This is not to say that the book is realistic in essence; it is basically a Bildungsroman, and it frequently conjures former books rather than real life. In the 1st section, when Theo is still living in New York City, I particularly noticed The Catcher in the Rye. When he starts living with the wealthy family of his school friend, his anticipation of being adopted by them induces features of Great Expectations, a book that is evoked again when he returns to them over a decade later to find the older woman of the family hold captive like Miss Havisham. He is taken away to Las Vegas and falls in with a wicked crowd, reminding Oliver Twist. As in that book, the reader comprehends that some of this horde provide needed support for the young man. Theo returns to New York and, years later, finds himself traveling around dark places with Boris, his criminal minded Las Vegas friend, following the trace of a lost painting. This prompted me of the finest work of Stephen Dobyns. Some parts of the book even evoke The Maltese Falcon, though the book gives its namesake creation as more than just a MacGuffin. Others will find diverse examples, I’m sure. This book is long and rich.

I found myself abode for the most part on some of the book’s secondary themes, as they are less frequently conversed. What is the worth of authenticity, and can a facsimile ever be as momentous as the original? Can we be enthused sometimes by the lacking of something as much as we would have been by its presence? In a profile of Tartt on October 21, the NYT said that this book raises such questions as “whether it is promising to be good, what role love plays in our conduct and what in life is real and enduring.” It’s a magnificent book, worth every penny and every hour needed to read it.
