The Opal Deception was absolutely my favorite in the Artemis Fowl series back in the day. It comes about the back of a huge cliffhanger in the prior book, the risk factor is higher than ever, and this book certainly carry on the fashion established in The Eternity Code of taking a murky turn. The prior book had stern consequences for our characters, but they were finally rescued from those consequences, with undeniably a large cost paid. The Opal Deception goes even murkier, with moments there’s no rescue from, and beyond doubt flinging our heroes out from the frying pan straight into the fire. There’s non-stop exciting action from start to finish in this one too, and the complete variety of pickles and circumstances the characters face make this the series’ best rollercoaster of an adventure, in my view. Colfer is always great at the display-don’t-tell saying though, interlacing this emotive progress into the unfolding action a bit at a time – and in passing, keeping us reading the series by having his characters grow at a gentle pace whereas the fast-paced action takes the head of our consideration. I remember being on the verge of my seat the 1st time I read this. Admittedly these days I wasn’t quite as engrossed; but obviously I already knew what was going to happen, since this was a re-read.
Highly recommended to all young adult fantasy fans out there. Although the Artemis Fowl series is intended for pre-teens, it’s definitely entertaining for adults, and considering the state of the young adult genre nowadays if you want something that is not usual in a school, where the leading character is not a exceptional snowflake, where there are no supernatural luvs or love triangles, but has real action, plot, and fantasy in great amounts, with the additional bonus of cool gadgetry – you may find what you’re looking for here.
On an associated note, I am fascinated with the way many characters are characterized in these scene deviations. In other novels, the viewpoint is often only delivered by main characters, but during the course of Artemis Fowl novels, the story is not only told by main characters. No, much of the info hail from background characters such as Dr. Jargon and other people who we depend on to gain a little more knowledge of the proceedings.
This is absolutely well worth a read, as is the rest of the series.
