As first sentences go, “I may have found a solution to the Wife Problem” has prospects as an instant classic. But is this a dark murder story or a self-help relationship book? Well, neither: it’s an engaging romantic comedy, and the storyteller, professor of genetics Don Tillman (39, tall, brainy and employed: “Logically I should be attractive to a wide range of women”), is an undiagnosed Asperger’s type who Simsion uses to discover how a mature autistic man might approach a romantic relationship. Friendships are rare enough: Don has a total of 2 – his colleague at a Melbourne university, Gene, and Gene’s psychologist wife, Claudia (the couple have an open relationship, which lets Gene to chase his desire of sleeping with a woman from every country in the world).
Gene and Claudia try to help Don Find love but “unfortunately their approach was grounded on the traditional dating standard, which I had formerly abandoned on the basis that the chances of success did not validate the effort and negative experiences”. And thus is The Wife Project born.
To choose a suitable wife, Don designs a thorough questionnaire that filters out unpromising candidates: women who are unpunctual, bulky, and vegetarian; who drink or smoke or have STDs. And then he meets Rosie, who fails on almost every score. Although, on past form, it looks like there is no chance of love blossoming. When Rosie procures Don’s genetic expertise to help find her natural father, otherwise known as The Father Project, the two are thrown into an engaging series of comic set pieces and sometimes life-threatening situations.
Warm-hearted and perfectly pitched, with thoughtful themes that are worn casually, this very amusing read promises to put Don Tillman on the comic fictional map somewhere between Mr. Pooter and Adrian Mole. Through his fights to understand and empathize with other humans, Don imparts us to see the humorous side of our own often unintelligible behavior – and to embrace the differently abled.
I would actually love a sequel to ‘The Rosie Project’ because when I got to the last page I instantly missed Don Tillman and wanted him back! But whatever Graeme Simsion chooses to write next, I’ll be reading because he’s now an automatic-buy author for me.
It’s a great, quirky and intellectual love story. It’s laugh-out-loud funny and surprisingly touching.
Don is a brilliantly offbeat story character and Rosie is his perfect stop. Graeme Simsion writes both characters pitch perfect.
I think one of the reasons the story is so alluring is that it’s written by a man, from a man’s perspective. And it’s certainly not lad lit.
This book is going to be a huge hit and justly so. Highly recommended.
