The Gladers have escaped their Maze only to catch themselves in an even more scary and inevitable condition. Having discovered that they have been just test subjects in an ongoing experiment from secretive International Corporation WICKED (World in Catastrophe Kill zone Experiment Department). According to WICKED, the Gladers are providing them with priceless data, forming patterns that will hopefully unlock the key to save the world. A world that has been seared dry and ravaged by disease and catastrophe. Due to extreme solar flares, civilization has distorted into chaos as people have contracted a shattering disease called The Flare, slowly turning them into senseless, flesh-hungry killers, or “cranks.” All of WICKED’s operations – the wiping of the teenagers’ memories, the ritualized experiments, the grievers, the homicides, and the death games – have all been a essential evil to save the fate of humanity or so WICKED says.
Indeed, Thomas and his fellow gladers have somewhat different reaction to WICKED’s fussy plans and defenses. When the group wakes up, they find themselves in a germ-free environment with an adult behind some kind of force field. The “Rat Man” (as Thomas names him) tells the boys that the next stage of experimentation is about to initiate – The Scorch Trials. The rules are simple. The boys are to travel 100 miles across a tough, parched landscape in two weeks. Their inspiration? Each of the boys has been infected with The Flare, and the only way left to get a treatment is to reach the so called “Safe Haven” at the end of this final test. Without any other option, Thomas and his friends agreed on another difficult test, confronted with WICKED’s many conspiracies as well as the deadly cranks running rampant in the city. Excluding Teresa, the only person that matters most to Thomas, has gone without a trace, and some way she is part of WICKED’s next phase of research.
The Scorch Trials is an insanely heart-thumping, action-packed book. Picking up directly after the dramatic events of the maze, Thomas and his fellow Gladers get about a day’s pardon before being thrown back into the fire, and the risks are even higher this time around. WICKED’s tactics are not exactly clear or logical at this point in the series, so possibly that’s a point of mystery that will be cleared up in the next book.
From a pure conspiracy point of view, The Scorch Trials does a fantastic job of pacing and developing the supreme storyline, which is not a small achievement because once the boys are out of the maze, the whole makeup of the series changes. The notion of The Flare, the scorched land, and the continuing insanity of the cranks is inventive and shocking – for instance, Thomas comes across a self-mutilated man who stalks Thomas down because he wants Thomas’s nose. Seriously, this is scary stuff. Overall, this book is a good read mixed with crazy and horrifying scenes and ending another insane cliff-hanger. I’m intent to see how it will all turn out. James Dashner’s The Scorch Trials is a heart-thumping rush of a book. Suggested, especially for cautious readers.
