Review

I really loved this book. I thought that it was very amusing, and while not exactly unique (I mean, folklore and seeks and the like aren’t just brand-spankings’-new) it is still fascinating and engaging to see things with a fresh twist. In this book, Percy illicitly gets on another mission to help save Camp Half-Blood after someone rancor a special tree which holds up the supernatural defenses around the camp. Percy is hinged in this book by Tyson, who is cool, but really prompted me of Grawp. Tyson is big, an idiot sage and committed to the only person who has given him away a smidgeon of respect – Percy. Together, they, along with Anna Beth, go on a mission to find an imperiled satyr and a lost mystical item. Behemoths are stumbled upon, make-overs made, swashbucklers pirated, oceans cruised, more behemoths came across, chauvinisms are both vindicated and precluded, more monsters, new coalitions made- if only momentarily, amities tested, and old war homages paid by Allied zombie soldiers… not necessarily in that order. I love the transformation of the gods in this series. Hermes for one was especially amusing… or at best his confidants George and Martha were. Very cute.

This book is very entertaining! There was barely a moment when something sensational wasn’t happening, and those momentary occasions in the middle of action sequences were packed with enough wit to carry the reader onto the next scene. Rick Riordan has an approach of instilling so much disposition and natural wit into the story that I forgot I wasn’t actually reading from the viewpoint of half-human, half-god thirteen-year-old. That’s really saying something. Therefore, I got to say, the writing is unique and adrenaline-charged. I never had a problem with the phrasing Riordan uses or the pacing, which is very fast but not so fast that it felt hasty. I can see the similarities between this series and Harry Potter, but they are also diverse enough to not be sidetracking. I got engrossed in the story, and let myself dwell in it, which I love. It’s only on thinking that I can see the association to Harry Potter. But again, it’s not overpowering to the extent of being a knock-off series. Even the conclusion was eased to a close, but still succeeded to slot in a twist that makes me want to read the 3rd book right now!!!!
