Ever After High: Storybook of Legends was a fast-paced, light read that truly gave fairy tales a new twist. The book is proposed for middle school readers and the prose, conversations, and some of the problems the characters faced imitate that, but I don’t think there is anything mature readers can’t relate to in this book.
The plot of this revolves around the notion that the sons and daughters of renowned fairy tale characters all join a boarding school together. The first year, they are given the liberty to take classes that they like, but the second year they are prepared to be the characters their parents are in their stories.
In Second year the characters must sign their name in the Storybook of Legends and initiate to assume their role as the hero or villain etc. They have no choice in this matter, they follow this or they will disappear and the former characters in their story will not be able to get their ‘happily ever after’.
Queen Raven, daughter of the Evil Queen, is having jiffy thoughts about this. The plot of the first book revolves around Queen Raven trying to discover herself and see if there is any way that she can change her fate and not become the Evil Queen.
I believe this plot line permits mature readers to relate to the story. Every adult knows what it feels like to not fit in, feel as if their life is in the hands of others, etc. Additionally relating to mature readers, this plot line sends a delicate, but important message to the younger readers, that your life and destiny is your own.
Usually, I would say a novel that includes this idea is destined to fail, but Hale truly pulls this off. Sure, there are unusual things that drove me a little crazy, but it was a pleasant, fast, read that I truly enjoyed. I can only think of a few of other novelists that would be able to pull this sort of novel off without it being a complete disaster.
One thing that drove me crazy is that everything has some sort of cutesy nickname. Hext books instead of textbooks and list goes on. I think it would be appealing for younger readers, but it just made my eye twitch at times.
Shannon Hale does abrilliant job of taking familiar characters, Snow White, Evil Queen, etc., and adding an exclusive twist to them. The characters are still conversant, but Hale really does make them her own. I think this in particular is what makes this book stand out.
Just be warned, there are two more books intended for the series. So, not all questions or problems are resolved in this book, which is a little disappointing.
Overall, if you are able to put aside the clear marketing trick and love fairy tale re telling then this may be the book for you. The way of writing is certainly middle school, but this novel is really a page-turner and worth the read.
