The Tales of Beedle the Bard contains five richly varied fairy tales, each with its own magical character that will variously bring happiness, glee and the thrill of mortal danger.
Supplementary notes for each story kept by Professor Albas Dumbledore will be adored by Muggles and wizards equally, as the Professor thinks on the morals illuminated by the tales, and tells snippets of information about life at Hogwarts.
This is a devotedly designed little book, perfect to read if you feel the need for a swift ‘Potter fix’. The five fairy tales themselves are well written and pleasing, particularly The Fountain of Fair Fortune and The Tale of the Three Brothers. I can easily picture witches and wizards reading these as bedtime stories to their kids in Rowling’s world.
Unfortunately they are very short tales, which feels about the right length for each one, but overall, doesn’t deliver much in the way of reading. This is a very thin volume, just 100 pages, and the majority of which is actually consumed by Dumbledore’s notes after each story. Most of which I felt were needless as they inclined to either explain each fairy tale or provide little material that any Harry Potter fan wouldn’t already know from reading the books. Dumbledore’s reflections also felt, in some places, purely out of character.
Eventually this is a fine little read but somewhat disappointing considering what Rowling could have done with it. This only took me an hour to finish and I would have liked to have seen many more tales, particularly as I did, enjoy the five that were included (at least one other story is referenced twice but we never get to read it).
Dumbledore’s notes had a few fascinating pieces of information, but I wanted more. We all know how many follow-ups and backstories and tributary characters Rowling has hidden away regarding the Harry Potter universe — and it would have been great to have been given some more awareness. I can’t support but think the only reason they were there, was to try to bulk the book out a bit.
The book have a lovely design, and a part of the money from each purchase goes to the Children’s High Level Group. Along with J.K’s talent for knitting a brilliant story, and the mention of two favorite characters, these are reasons, sufficient to pick this one up. But I have to be honest when I say it was a slight lacking in material. You will not gather any sense of depth, class and, as everybody calls it, the magic of the Harry Potter universe. This book is really a tasty dessert to those who’ve indulged on the seven course series.
